Message from our President January 2023

The LPCIBC was set up as a partnership between Lewisham and Crystal Palace Indoor Bowls Clubs (LIBC and CPIBC) and Lewisham Council in June 2021, and this arrangement suited all parties. LIBC did not have enough playing members to make it financially viable to re-open the bowls centre. CPIBC could not afford the cost of maintaining its site in Anerley. The Centre re-opened in September 2021 and we manage it with GLL (Better) on behalf of the Council. LCPIBC operates through a Centre Operations Group drawn from both Clubs’ members with the primary aim of running it as a bowls’ club not as a leisure centre.

By any measure, the Club has been successful and far more so than any of us could have dreamed in September 2021. We now have over 320 playing members, that’s more than double the number playing when the Centre was closed in 2020 – many thanks to those of you who have introduced friends to the Club. We organise a wide variety of bowls activities, including interclub fixtures, roll-ups and prize draws, aggregates, leagues, and competitions (internal, County and National), and this year our Denny Cup team reached the fourth round of this prestigious competition. There is, of course, the opportunity for casual play and practice, and we have an outstanding coaching programme.

The facilities are now much improved since September 2021, with a general refurbishment of the social area, improved parking arrangements, key-fob access, and CCTV. Our own members refurbished the kitchen and bar and have successfully installed the electronic scoreboard. Our relationship with Sanford Trades, our Catering Contractor, goes from strength to strength and we are hugely grateful to Gail and Jamie for the service that they provide. The availability of excellent food and drink, plus a well-stocked bar has played a big part in bringing the players from both Clubs together, and we have enjoyed several social events throughout the year.

It is clear that our members now see the organisation as one Club, rather than two Clubs working in partnership. My sincere thanks to all our hard working members who have made this possible.

The first AGM of the newly constituted Club will be at 9.30am on Saturday 25 March 2023 in the St Laurence Centre, 37 Bromley Rd, Catford, SE6 2TS. At this meeting, we hope to adopt a constitution and club rules, plus elect a Management Committee to take the Club forward. All the information that you need will be forwarded by email, and posted in the Club, over the next few weeks.

This will be a very important meeting and it is essential that we are quorate – the proposed draft constitution requires 20% of playing members to be present – this means we shall need at least 65 playing members to be present. Please note the date in your diaries and make every attempt to attend.

Finally, I wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.

Kay Lanston
